Web-based proxy server provide easy access to other sites through web browser without having to install any software or change browser setting. Web-based proxy usually provide user with an URL box to type in destination URL to start browsing anonymously. There are a few scripts available to run web-based proxy service, most famous are phpproxy and cgi-proxy.

A proxy server allow other computer to access internet by acting as a buffer between host(internet server) and client(your computer). In a large organization it allows many computer to access Internet with only a single Internet connection thus saving cost and with many advanced feature it also provide security, filtering, and increased connection speed through cache.
Proxy Server in Local Area Network Advanced proxy servers usually provide NAT (Network Address Translation) service that eliminate the need to setup proxy server information on client computer. It usually used in a LAN (Local Area Network) where user computer is provided local network IP with gateway pointing to the proxy server computer that provide Internet access. All software will automatically able to access Internet without having to setup proxy server information. Proxy servers in LAN environment usually provide firewall and filtering support, shared connections, caching, and even anti virus protection. Public Proxy Servers In using a public proxy server, all data between host and client must pass through the proxy server which allow your IP address to be concealed and prevent unauthorized access to your computer through the Internet. By chaining anonymous proxies, it is possible to obfuscate activities from host server. Anonymous proxy servers can be use for all kind of application such as browsers, email client, ftp client, etc. New Internet software usually come with a setting to connect through a proxy server.
One drawback of using public proxy server is user have to setup all software individually to connect to a proxy server and need to change it all one by one whenever they want to switch to a new proxy server. In order to simplify this, user can install special software like Proxifier that act as a personal proxy server on user computer by directing all software to connect through a proxy server or proxy servers. It can connect all applications through HTTP or Socks proxy server (even software application without proxy server support built in) without any need to change or setup proxy information on every application. Proxifier also provide ability to chaining through lots of proxy to make user even more anonymous. |
